A local manufacturer needed a die casting reverse engineered from the 3D scan of a legacy part. This scan of the die cast bracket was performed with a CMM fitted with an SLP500 laser probe. Our model was created in less than 2 days. It was easy to add design intent during the modeling phase through the use of Geomagic Design X, a powerful reverse engineering software packed with powerful features. The goal was to create an accurate “design intent” CAD model complete with feature tree in the customers native CAD package. Our process not only documents the legacy product, it also allows for the correction of worn surfaces. In the end, a fully parametric CAD model, which was needed to create a new tool and conforming parts had been delivered to the client. A brief inspection in the form of a 3D error map was delivered as well.
